Yvette was working at the airport as a waitress before the earthquake in Haiti. She is 42 years old. The REBUILD shop has been her first opportunity to work since January 12. “After the earthquake I was unable to save anything. I lost it all. I sleep in a tent. My husband has no job and I have two little brothers and a niece to take care of. I have 4 children as well. This job is changing my life. The tires in the street were just trash.”
Ody is a professional shoe maker in Haiti who has been teaching our artisans the tricks of the trade. He started as a volunteer, but quickly became part of our family. “My house was destroyed in the earthquake. I was making shoes before it happened, but my contact book was in my house and I lost all of my connections. I have been married for 25 years, and we have 3 daughters. There are 8 people living in the apartment I now rent. I am happy to say all of my girls have gone to school. I don’t make as much money in the shop as I did was I was selling my own shoes, but I am here happily.”
